El Viejo Almacen Tango Show Buenos Aires is a very traditional spectacle in San Telmo with successful touches of folklore, combining the two styles of Tango in individual and group choreographies, the only Tango House with its own orchestra and well-known singers. Installed in the heart of San Telmo, El Viejo Almacén was the first Tango House, visited by world personalities throughout its more than fifty years of history.
About El Viejo Almacen Tango Show:
In a mythical corner of Buenos Aires, in San Telmo, there is the first Tango show in Buenos Aires, El Viejo Almacén. The place is so old that the waters of the now distant river reached its feet and British sailors who arrived at the port gathered inside of it. Then it housed sad tsarist Russian refugees, it was a hospital and finally a grocery store. In 1979 it was bought by one of the most famous Tango singers in history, Edmundo Rivero. With this Tango Show in San Telmo the first “Tanguería” (Tango House) was born, as a mixture of bohemia and Tango and it became the mecca of the Buenos Aires night for all those who visited the city; kings, presidents, artists…everyone passed through the great little Old Warehouse. All the greats sang on his stage, and even today that “Tango animal” named Hugo Marcel sings here.
The renewed El Viejo Almacen show combines traditional Tango with a creative and dynamic performance, with elements that are not seen in other shows, imposing an enthusiastic rhythm that envelops and fascinates the audience, from the beginning to an end that seems like a party end to which artists and audience arrive.
El Viejo Almacen Tango Show Buenos Aires makes a very correct display of Tango choreographies, with a profusion of costume changes, and intersperses solo dance pieces to show off each couple. Each piece harmoniously combines the style on the floor, the milonguero tango with the stage tango.
Around the half of the show, a folkloric section is comes out, in charge of a gaucho couple that surprises with the skill in handling the boleadoras and the legüero bass drum. He is impeccable, and she is the great surprise, when using the boleadoras and tapping malambo, something generally reserved for men.
The singer Melina Liberati impresses with the firmness of her high notes and the way she interprets the tangos, giving each song a different style and meaning of its own. At the end of this Tango Show in San Telmo, and before the choreographic closing, that tango hurricane who is Hugo Marcel appears on stage, with a mastery of the stage that puts the public in the pocket of the first moments, everyone ends up singing under his baton, happy and carried away by the know-how of this man with more than fifty years of experience in theater and television.
Marcel walks through a well-woven potpourri by the El Viejo Almacén quintet, and he takes the emotion to its peak towards the end, where a cappella sweeps us away with his enormous voice. Returning to the orchestra, conducted by maestro Fernando Marzan, it tackles the songs at full speed and makes room for different authors, leaving room for the brilliance of the young bandoneon player Jorge Sequeira, whose love for the instrument and passion for Tango are evident. The end to pure emotion is lived in the final greeting of each artist, taking them the well-deserved applause and us the memory of a good night of Tango.
For dinner, El Viejo Almacén has made a huge investment, acquiring the building beside the venue years ago, establishing three dining rooms that are opened according to demand and always set aside a VIP area. After dinner, the waiters will invite you to cross the romantic cobblestones of Balcarce to enter that piece of history that is this Tango show in San Telmo.
The food quality at El Viejo Almaced have a very good standard and abundant, as well as the wines included in the menu are very well coupled in relation to price-quality. We recommend the cold meat empanadas, or the very tasty pumpkin soup cream. As main dishes, the chorizo steak and the bondiola, although for pasta lovers there is an option of ham and cheese sorrentinos, abundant, very important to highlight because generally the sorrentino dishes if our grandmother serves them to us are scarce. For dessert there are very classic options such as the homemade flan, the “so very porteño” vigilante dessert (sweet potato with cuartirolo cheese) but our recommendation is the El Viejo Almacén cake (obviously the house’s specialty) or the ice cream triflé with meringue.
El Viejo Almacen Tango show Buenos Aires is a classic show, in the heart of the beautiful and nostalgic San Telmo area.
